Cruise FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?

About $1,100–$2,000 per person, including travel insurance and fees. I’ve broken the full pricing down in my earlier post on costs. “Free at Sea” is a package that includes drinks, dining and more, and it is optional. I have a question out to Kerry (travel agent) about the cost for a cabin that accomodates 3 or more.

Wait — isn’t that a lot of money?

It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is: it’s right in line with a normal vacation, and in many cases less. For comparison, the average 7-day cruise runs about $1,200 to $2,500 per person, and the average week-long domestic vacation in the U.S. costs roughly $2,400 per person. A family of four spends an average of around $7,200 on a week-long domestic vacation. So our reunion lands at or below what most people already spend on a typical week away — except this one comes with everyone you love on the same boat. And because most of us don’t have to fly to the departure port, we skip what’s usually the biggest single expense of any trip — airfare, which averages about $378 per person each way.

What is the cruise line?

Norweigan Cruise Lines. The ship is called The Breakaway. More info about the ship in a previous blog post as well.

Where does it go?

Leaves from Boston, goes to Canada, then Bermuda.

Do I have to fly?

For most of us, no — the departure port is drivable, which keeps the total cost well below a typical cruise or vacation.

What about the departure port?

Getting There: Flynn Cruiseport Boston 1 Black Falcon Avenue, South Boston, MA 02210

The ship departs at 4:00 PM and returns at 8:00 AM on the final day.
